Western Outdoor News Gives Away Two New Boats To Winners

WON Bass Tournament October 2011

Lake Nacimiento, CA - Lake Nacimiento was the destination for this year's Western Outdoor News (WON) Bass Tri-States Team Championship. 91 boats participated in the two day bass tournament over the weekend of October 5 & 6, 2011.

Nearly 200 anglers met under the fog filled sky early on Saturday morning and awaited the strike of seven marking the start of the first day of the competition. The weigh-in started at 3:00 pm with anglers reporting an abundance of small bass but a difficulty in catching quality ones. Nevertheless, the anglers brought their best and weighed in a number of bags over 10 pounds and a number of big fish over 2.5 pounds.

After the first day, the team of Bryan Grier and Scott Mullens hold first place with their 5-fish limit weighing 11.16 pounds. Dan Castelheno had the big fish with a spotted bass of 3.43 pounds after the first day.

The fishing was slower on Saturday with very few teams weighing in bags over 8 pounds. Sam James brought in the winning big fish of 3.70 pounds. None of the teams were able to beat Grier and Mullen's 11.16 pound bag from Saturday.

The awards ceremony was held at the Paso Robles Event Center at 5:30 pm WON awarded the top finishing team from the north and the top team from the south with a Nitro Z-6 fishing boat equipped with a Mercury 150 FourStroke. And if that wasn't enough, the option money pool was over $30,000! Bryan Grier and Scott Mullens took first place for Northern California with their total 10 fish weighing 19.77 pounds and Billy Skinner and Shaun Bailey took home first place for Southern California with their bag of 16.59 pounds.

Record Breaking Spotted Bass Caught at Lake Nacimiento

Lake Nacimiento has some exciting news to share!

Lake Nacimiento has a new lake record for biggest spotted
bass! On October 6, 2011 Dean Guzman of Paso Robles, California, caught a record breaking 6.5 lbs spotted bass, beating the old record of 5.5 lbs.

Guzman caught the beast using a Zara Spook top water lure near the boat ramp in Snake Creek of Lake Nacimiento. Luckily for the fish, he was released in the same spot he was caught and is swimming happily once again.
